Is World of Warcraft worth playing and paying monthly?

I had few friends that are recently playing World of Warcraft and they loved it. I heard that you also need to pay some kind of monthly payment in order to continue to play it. Can you guys give me some advice whether it’s worth playing as well as paying monthly or not. Thanks, guys.
